Dear Parents:
It is hard to believe Thanksgiving is upon us. Report cards will be posted next week and conferences will be on Thursday, November 21 and Friday, November 22. Please remember that there will be an 11:30 am dismissal on Thursday and Friday is a student holiday. A letter at the bottom of this email will unpack how to interpret your child’s grades. I hope you will find it helpful. I strongly suggest that if you plan to share the report card with your child, you wait until after you have your conference.
During these cold weather months, it is more important than ever to label your child’s clothing. Please make sure each item has the first and last name. We will have lost and found items in Mathews Foyer on conference days. Please check to see if any of those items belong to your child.
Our hearts go out to all of the people of the Philippines who have suffered great loss. Next Thursday, November 21, we will have a $1 NUD. Children should dress in the colors of the Philippines’ flag: red, yellow, blue and/or white. Our donations will be given to Save the Children’s Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund.
The Lower School Grandparent/Special Person Day for our kindergarten and fifth grade students is Monday, November 25. Parents of kindergarten and fifth grade students have received a letter regarding this day. We look forward to welcoming our fifth grade guests at 9:00 am and our kindergarten guests at 11:30 am. It is always a special day for all of us. We truly enjoy meeting your children’s grandparents and special guests.
All three divisions of the Lovett School are working together to plan a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and accomplishments. Our plan is to join together with our Breakthrough Atlanta Program on January 20, 2014, under the theme, "We Have a Dream." Please consider joining our Lovett and Breakthrough community on this day! We will be taking reservations until January 16, and we will continue to inform you about the day's events in the coming months. We ask that Lower School students be accompanied by a parent to the MLK Memorial March, so please include that information in your response to Darlene Walls at [email protected].
Schedule for the Day
11:45 am - Service in Alston Memorial Chapel
12:30 pm - Share a meal together in MS Multipurpose Room
1:15 pm - Leave campus for downtown Atlanta on Lovett buses
2:00 pm - Participate in MLK March (in downtown Atlanta)
4:00 pm - Return to Lovett
Lovett nurse, Nancy Skinner, would like you to know that pertussis is showing up in children in Atlanta. It is very contagious and is spread by cough droplets. It is most infectious before the cough with an onset of a runny nose. It can certainly mimic a cold. If your child has an excessive cough, please take your child to the pediatrician for testing and follow up. The Lovett infirmary thanks you.
Thanks to our Lower School Grade Reps who participated in our most recent meeting on Thursday, November 14. I would like to share a few points of interest from that meeting:
Warm regards,

Thanks to our Lower School Grade Reps who participated in our most recent meeting on Thursday, November 14. I would like to share a few points of interest from that meeting:
- Parents were updated on carpool. Mary and Edi met with Tony Biello and Chip Wood earlier this week. Tony and Chip feel that carpool is running as smoothly as possible, considering the large number of cars on campus during that time. Tony shared that no less than ten requests have been made to the city to repair the school zone sign.
- We discussed how the three divisions, Lower, Middle and Upper School, work together to develop strong writers. In the Lower School, we teach children all of the components of writing, one of which is grammar. In sixth grade, students study linguistics. This is an age appropriate time for this focused instruction. Our fifth grade teachers work closely with sixth grade to ensure a smooth transition.
- We have high performing students at Lovett, and we provide a challenging curriculum. However, in order to meet every child’s needs, teachers in the Lower School differentiate instruction in all areas, including math.
Warm regards,
Mary Baldwin
Lower School Principal
