Dear Parents,
It was lovely returning to school yesterday amidst a beautiful sea of green. The children look rested and eager to begin the final stretch of the 2013-14 school year.
Lovett graduate and Director of Partnerships for the Atlanta Mission, Robert Thrasher, was our chapel speaker today. He shared how his experiences with service learning at Lovett impacted him in college and beyond. From the time Robert was in the Upper School, he has been a leader in helping the homeless in Atlanta have a better life. An inspirational role model, Robert shared ways we can be more proactive. I am appreciative to Lanie McDowell and her parents for suggesting that Robert speak at chapel. Donations during the month of March will go to the Atlanta Mission.
In the last few months, Lower Schoolers contributed more than $1,000 in chapel offerings that were used to purchase donations for the Upper School service trip to India. They bought 1,000 book bags, shoes, and pencil boxes that they delivered to each school they visited during Spring Break. The excitement of the Indian students, upon receiving these gifts, was overwhelming. It was really special for our Lovett students to see the amount of joy that a simple pencil box or book bag brought to these children who have so little. A heartfelt thank you to all of the Lower School children who gave a chapel donation to this worthy cause.
On Wednesday, April 2, in honor of World Autism Awareness Day, we will have a “Light It Up Blue” NUD. Counselors Gayle Greenwood and Yasmine Schmid will be teaching the boys and girls about autism during their guidance classes. If you and your child would like to learn more about autism, you can find a great deal of information at www.autismspeaks.org.
One final reminder, Lower School children may now wear Lovett uniform shorts. Enjoy the beginning of spring, warm weather, and flowers in bloom.
Warm regards,
Mary Baldwin
