Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we only have about five weeks left of school. It is a busy time of year with many activities happening in and outside of school.
Many times, children forget items needed for all of the spring activities. We understand that, as a parent, you want to help your child by bringing those items to school. As we work to instill responsibility in our children, we ask that you refrain from doing so. We realize children will forget items at times and do not expect them to be perfect. This is a safe time for them to experience logical consequences. Thank you for your support with this policy.
Our last Walk to School Day is Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day). We ask families to carpool to school (even if they are walking from Cochise) and not to park in the Canoe shopping center. Please avoid, if possible, parking along Cochise Drive, especially on both sides of the street, which constricts traffic. For safety reasons, please do not drop children off along Woodland Brook. We will have Lovett security and police officers on duty that morning. The Lovett mascot will be at the bridge greeting walkers and walking children across the bridge.
The Lower School will also have a NUD on Tuesday, April 22, in honor of Earth Day. The children should wear Earth-themed clothing or the colors of the monarch butterfly (orange, yellow, black or white).
Thank you to our Lower School parent grade reps for their continual support this year. They brought several issues to our attention at our last meeting on April 3. Here is a summary of the topics discussed:
Sincerely,
Edi Houghton

Thank you to our Lower School parent grade reps for their continual support this year. They brought several issues to our attention at our last meeting on April 3. Here is a summary of the topics discussed:
- We have reminded teachers to give parents as much notice as possible when they will be invited to classroom celebrations or performances.
- We were happy to receive such positive feedback regarding the recent PSG meeting for fifth grade parents with the Middle School staff. The program was very informative and helpful.
- This year our current fifth graders will have the opportunity to have a “shadow visit” to the Middle School. They will attend a core class and have a session to hear from sixth grade counselors and students.
- One parent asked why the Middle School discontinued their musicals, so we asked for Jay Freer’s thoughts. Musicals are expensive (much more than Lower School musicals), and we found that asking theater and chorus to drop their entire curriculum to prepare for a musical together was not educationally sound. Middle School student do not rehearse a musical after school like Lower School students. It was a choice made to benefit both programs. Students this age are not really prepared for the rigors of performing a musical. Their voices are changing and need to be dealt with very carefully. It is not about performance at this age, as much as is about getting better at technique and preparing for Upper School musicals when that chance arrives.
- The P.E. teachers routinely wash the P.E. uniforms for children in grades 3-5. The frequency of the washing depends on the unit studied and the number of days the class has met.
- ASAP attempts to serve nutritional snacks as often as possible. Consideration is made to the ease of serving the snack to a large number of children, finding items the children will eat, and overall cost. Fruit is always available.
Sincerely,
