Dear Parents,
I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving and enjoyed this special time with friends and family. It is hard to believe the busy month of December is upon us. Here are a few reminders:
If you stopped by the library one morning last week, you found eighty-two third graders snuggled up with their favorite stuffed animals, munching on donut holes while reading their favorite books. Our students spent 100 minutes reading at the annual third grade read-a-thon. The students received pledges that will be used for shopping this week at Target for foster children who are in the Families First program. For many years, Lovett's third grade classes have partnered with Peachtree Presbyterian Church and Families First to help make a brighter Christmas for children who are not with their families during the holiday season. Thanks to the extreme generosity of Lovett parents, families and friends, our students raised over $6,500 which will be used to purchase gifts for many foster children. We will also use the funds to purchase gift cards for teens and foster families. This tradition is truly one of the highlights of third grade at Lovett!
We are excited to announce that Lovett will be participating in Computer Science Education Week's Hour of Code event over the week of December 9-15. Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics to be a maker, a creator, and an innovator. I encourage you to watch the 5-minute video on the importance of teaching children to code. On the same webpage, Ms. Becker has selected resources that are age appropriate for lower school students so you can quickly access them. All of our fourth and fifth grade students have been assigned logins for the Tynker program. Please take a moment and ask them about it!
During the next few weeks, please visit our Lost and Found if your child is missing something. On December 19, we will be sending all remaining items to the LPA for the Recycled Uniform Sale and/or to charity.
Please note that we have revised the section on the Lower School administrative page entitled, Who Can Help Me? Please take a moment to review it so you will know whom to contact for each situation.
Enjoy the next few weeks of holiday excitement.
Warm regards,
Mary Baldwin
