Dear Parents,
I hope your family had a nice break. My husband and I recently bought a small camper (r-pod) and spent our break camping at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park near Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. I never realized this part of the state had mountains. Some of the views looking down into the valleys were breathtaking. This is a beautiful part of our state.
If I had not had the opportunity to visit this area of the state and learn more about it, I would not appreciate it the way I do now. Without experiencing or having a clear understanding of something, it is difficult to appreciate what it offers. We would like to offer you the opportunity to develop an appreciation of Everyday Mathematics in the Lower School and an understanding of the strong mathematical foundation it lays for our students. Last week, you received an email about our math night for parents that is being presented by Teddi Bair, LS math department head, and Laurie Smilack, LS interim assistant principal. If you would like to attend, please RSVP. If you have already sent in your RSVP, you do not need to do it again. I hope you will be able to join us.
MATH NIGHT FOR PARENTS
Everyday Math Parent Night: Demystifying the Algorithms My Teacher Taught Me
For parents of students grades K - 5: Ever wonder why your child’s teacher is teaching Partial Sums and other ways to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems? What are alternative algorithms anyway?? Come see an engaging illustration of what your child needs to know, and when, in order to set him or her up for success in mathematics in Lower School and beyond. Presented by Laurie Smilack and Teddi Bair.
When: Wednesday, October 22 ~ 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Where: Lower School MPR
Who: Parents, grades K – 5
There are a few other events and announcements I would like to make you aware of.
1. LIA’s Worldfest will take place this Sunday, October 19 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm in the dell. This is always a wonderful event with food from around the world, games, cupcake contest, talent show and even a dunking booth. We will have a NUD on Friday, October 17 to promote this event. The children should wear colors from the Olympic flag, or clothing from or representing a country.
2. The Lovett/Westminister Challenge, which supports the True Blue Annual Fund, will end on October 30. To show our support for the challenge and True Blue, we will have a Lovett Spirit NUD on Friday, October 24. The children should wear Lovett t-shirts or blue and white clothing.
3. Our Afternoon Enrichment program still has a few spots left for Math Playground on Thursdays from 3:30-4:15. This enrichment is offered to 3rd and 4th graders. Sign up today at www.lovett.org/afternoon
