Dear Parents,
One of my goals this year is to strengthen the sense of community between our students, teachers and parents. As I thought about this newsletter, I wanted to share some of the ways our Lovett community has stepped up over the last few weeks to support one another or make our school even better.
Our fifth grade students left early last Thursday for their annual overnight trip to Nature’s Classroom. Under Kohler Sartain’s leadership, this trip is one of the highlights of the year for the children. Our school nurse, Nancy Skinner, and MS guidance counselor, Chase Jones, joined the children, our fifth grade lead teachers, several resource teachers, and assistant principal, Laurie Smilack, in enjoying hiking trips, ropes courses, team building activities, campfires and s’mores. I think it is also a sign of the relationship between faculty and their students that retired science teacher, Don Rigler, and previous LS teacher, Douglas Mogle, returned to chaperone this fantastic trip. While our PRIDE members were away, ten of our fourth graders stepped up and helped open car doors in the morning.
Mary Baldwin, retired LS principal, always said, “We can’t rest on our laurels.” The Lower School is a great school, but we always are looking for ways to make it a little better each day. I so appreciate it when people come and say, “I have a thought on how we can improve…” or “What do you think about this idea?” Recently, Sarah Spiers and Elisa Cordell have come to me with new ideas. It was Sarah who gave the suggestion to have families visit resource classrooms during Parent Night. I heard from many of you that this was a success. After doing some research on carpool procedures, Elisa Cordell approached me this summer with the idea of using the SmartBoards for dismissal rather than the intercom. The children now experience a much calmer end to their day.
We held our first Parent Grade Rep meeting last week. I want to thank the parents who have volunteered to serve in this important role. As I mentioned before, I do appreciate it when people offer suggestions on ways we could be even better. Thank you to the parent who offered suggestions on how we can help our new families become familiar with the campus and our procedures at the beginning of the year. A summary of the meeting is attached.
There are just a few things I would like you to be aware of:
· At the request of several parents, Afternoon Enrichment is pleased to introduce a new program -- Math Playground -- for 3rd and 4th grade students. Veteran teacher, Beryl Horton, will be joining us on Thursday afternoons to introduce advanced level math concepts using puzzles and other manipulatives. For more information or to register, click Math Playground
· The Lower School will have a Blue/White NUD on Friday, September 19, in honor of Lovett’s Homecoming.
· Individual student pictures will be taken for grades 2-5 on Tuesday, September 16, and grades K-1 on Wednesday, September 17. Information was sent earlier on how to order photographs.
I look forward to us building our community and working with you throughout the year.
